Handicrafts Cane and Bamboo Handicrafts From time immemorial Tripura has carved out a name for itself in the field of Handicrafts. The Gifted artisans produce wonderful objects of crafts from simple material like cane, bamboo & wood. There rare artistic skill has not been streamlined in the manufacture of exquisite household pieces. Tripura's unique topography and the gracious nature bestowed their choicest blessings on the hereditary artisans of Tripura. Here three distinct cultures viz. Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam have converged together to give shape and content to a unique tradition that found eloquent expression through immemorable work of art & crafts made out of very simple materials like cane, bamboo, clay, wood, palm leaf etc. With the passage of time, there has been changes in the demographic character of the state. But in each phase of her history, Tripura has shown remarkable inner strength of assimilation of synthesis, while retaining her own traditional heritage. With the original distinct tribal motifs were added the skills of Manipuri and Bengali artisans who came subsequently to settle in this land. Time has changed and so also the quick adaptability of our gifted artisans who never failed to respond to the demands of contemporary tastes. Cane & Bamboo occupy a distinctive place in the life of Tripura. From cradle to grave, there is hardly any occasion, complete without the use of cane & bamboo. Handloom Non-commercial looms are operated by the tribal inhabitants of the state. They weave fabrics for their own consumption whereas the commercial looms are controlled by the Bengalis as well as Manipuri weavers. So the Handloom Industry of Tripura is the reflection of Tribals, Manipuri and Bengalies. However, handloom is the single largest and perhaps the oldest industry in the state of Tripura and is scattered in the rural as well as semi-urban areas. It has grown with the civilisation itself and people in this region look to weaving inseparable part of life. THe industry has grown as the art has passed from one generation to another. It plays a dominant role in the economic development of the rural masses. This industry also forms an important sector providing employment to the rural poor. The tribal women of Tripura religiously devoted to weaving. The beginning of ritual has always been with the offering of flowers and beautiful piece of Riha and Risa given by the great grand mother and followed by each and every tribal family as their tradition. In fact it was a pre-requisite for every tribal girl to know weaving. Otherwise she should not be considered as a bride. The tribal people produce their own clothes imparting them various designs, texture as well as colour; all of which are long lasting. Among the traditional produces, mention may be made of Risa and Riha (breast garments). Riha is remarkable for its colorful variety and texture. The Bengalee weavers who have migrated in Tripura from the erstwhile East Pakistan (Bengal) are the main commercial weaver and play a significant role in the development of Handloom Industry. They have also contributed to the development of texture, variety in the Handloom Industry. The Manipuri weavers are also playing an important role in developing Handloom Industry in Tripura.
Horticulture Tripura is fortunate to have agrciultural as well as climatic conditions suitable for production of a large variety of horticultural crops chief among which include "Queen" and "Kew"; varieties of pineapple, oranges, lichis and cashew. Each of these from Tripura are well known in the rest of the country. These products are also free of any chemical residue. Insipte of this, the Fruit Processing industry in Tripura is at a nascent stage. The Government has helped the state of Tripura in pineapple processing- NERAMAC (a Government of India undertaking), has set up a modern Pineapple Juice Concentrate Plant at Nalkata in North Tripura District, with a processing capacity of about 5760 TPA. The Plant at Nalkata is operating at a low level due to non-operation of aseptic filter. However, the same is being rectified and natural juice concentrate will be available from the pineapple season of this millenium year. Rubber The state government has taken up an ambitious programme to increase the area under rubber plantations by another 20,000 MT by the end of Ninth Plan i.e., by 2001-02 AD, with assistance from the Central Government, the Rubber Board and the World Bank. As a result, it is expected that the rubber production, which is presently about 5,000 MT per annum, will increase to about 20,000 MT. Natural Gas One major advantage in setting up a gas-based project in Tripura is the concessional pricing of gas for North-eastern region.
